Well Water Wizards: Inspection & Filtration
Private wells are common in Star Valley and the surrounding county islands. But well water changes. It needs testing. Here's who ensures your water is safe.

One thing that surprises many buyers relocating from the Valley: a significant portion of homes in Star Valley, the county islands around Payson, and parts of Pine and Strawberry are on private wells rather than municipal water.
Why Well Water Needs Attention
Unlike city water, which is treated and tested continuously, well water is your responsibility. Mineral content, bacteria, and other contaminants can shift over time — especially after heavy rains or droughts. The good news: testing is inexpensive, and most issues are completely fixable.
What a Well Inspection Covers
- Flow rate — You want at least 3–5 GPM for a typical household
- Water quality — A lab test for bacteria, nitrates, hardness, and other contaminants
- Pump condition — Age, pressure, and general function of the submersible pump
- Tank and pressure system — The holding tank and pressure switch
Filtration Options
If your water tests high in minerals or has any bacterial concerns, there are good filtration options — from point-of-use filters to whole-home systems. Costs range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on the issue.
